Will your story continue beyond you?

Posted on February 11th, 2020

Yesterday 10,000 Baby Boomers retired. Within 10 years, Millennials will be 70% of the leadership team. And GenX’ers have one foot on the dock and one on the boat! So how does your company story, its sustainability continue you? You’ve passionately built your organization and sacrificed greatly to be a contribution to your family, the employee families and your community. Does it continue to thrive after you step aside?

Boomers, GenX’ers, and Millennials…Is there really a difference of motivation, leadership style, and communication? The short answer is “Yes” and they are highly dependent on one another, not unlike the Scrabble tiles.   But first a generally accepted definition:

Boomers are 54 – 74 years old.

GenX’ers are 40 – 54 years old.

Millennials are 20 – 40 years old.

Of course, it is dangerous to assign labels and broad brush characteristics across a group of people.  That said, ask your Boomers, GenX’ers and Millennials to define these words:

Technology

Opportunity

Generosity

Wealthy

Hard work

Ideal working environment

Productive meeting

Training

Leadership

Success

Vacation

Are there any differences between the generations and how they view these words? So while individuals are not fully homogenized by the labels, is it safe to say that there ARE generational differences? What impact is that having on your messaging, your culture and the health of your organization?

Next month, more tips!
